David JoaquinArtist Biography
David Joaquin was born in San Diego, California and was raised in California and Hawaii. He is mainly a self-taught artist, with his mother being his first art teacher. David’s mother emigrated from Columbia, where she was a weaver and woodcarver. David recalls, “when I was a child, I was surrounded by art. My mother built our house by hand with recycled wood. All the cabinets, beds and moldings were beautifully carved and adorned with painted vines and flowers.”David began painting works of visions and dreams, and having a sweat lodge in Hawaii exposed him to many different tribes, such as Lakota, Zuni, Ute, and Crow, who would come to sweat with the family. Each would come with a different story and way, shared in the hot darkness. This is what I began to “see” in my dreams and in wood grains, thus encouraging me to study my own native heritage: Chibcha from Columbia and Mi’kmaq from Quebec. Here is a selection of original paintings and giclee prints available from The Gallery in Mt. Shasta:
