Art collectors and galleries have classified Baumann’s work as "Romantic Luminism." His painting style is truly an American style that is characterized by the use of light in a landscape using aerial perspective. (see more below)

This style focuses light in his paintings in ways that captures the mood and splendor of the landscape and draws the viewer into the romantic feeling of the landscape. Baumann comments, “I have used this method in my painting for years. I include a center of interest using the luminosity of sunlight blended with the softness of tone, and concealing some of my brush strokes to allow the subtle effects of light to infuse the local color of the subject.
Modern painters attempt to create paintings that impress the viewers with clever uses of the brush. Most of these paintings look the same, with one stroke here and a stroke there, with palette colors that define the painting rather than effectively using the power of light in their work. These artists produce boring work that lacks inspiration and the feeling of life in their work”.
When Baumann goes on a walk or drive, he looks at the light around him, not at the objects. He sees the forms and the intensity of the infusion of light. This understanding of "seeing" is what enables Baumann to bring an infusion of light into his paintings.
Stefan Baumann shares this creative principle through his PBS television show, The Grand View, where he demonstrates how to see and paint the beauty found in our National Parks and forests, while painting on location.
Inspiration surrounded Stefan at an early age. Raised in South Lake Tahoe, California, Baumann developed a passion for painting, travel, and teaching. His parents are of Swiss and Bavarian heritage; his mother, a business woman and homemaker, taught him the value of hard work and of staying committed to his dreams; His father, a bakery owner, nurtured an appreciation of art and music.
While studying art and architectural history on scholarship at Stanford University, Stefan worked as a private painting teacher. After moving to San Francisco in 1980 he began Baumann Fine Art, an endeavor that showcased his passion for landscape painting. Three years ago, Baumann permanently moved to the Mount Shasta area, drawn by the beauty of the mountain.
Baumann has been featured in People magazine and his work included in the collections of the Rockefellers, Annenburgs, and former President Reagan.
